If you have ever posted something you were proud of and watched it barely reach anyone, you are not alone. That is where hashtags come in. They are like little doorways that lead new people to your content. When you use them the right way, hashtags can help your posts travel beyond your followers and find people who actually care about what you share.

Hashtags are basically digital signposts. They tell the algorithm and users what your post is about and help your content join a bigger conversation. Whether you are posting a funny video, a motivational quote, or behind-the-scenes content, hashtags help you show up in the feeds of people who already like that type of content.

A lot of people use hashtags the wrong way. You have probably seen posts with a huge block of tags like #love, #happy, or #vibes. Those might be popular, but they are also way too general. They do not do much for your reach. What works better is choosing hashtags that actually fit your content and your niche.

For example, if you are a small creator sharing Instagram tips, you might use tags like #socialmediastrategy, #reelgrowth, or #contentcreatorlife. Those speak directly to the people who want to learn from you.

A good mix is usually around five to ten hashtags per post. Pick a few broad ones, a few medium ones, and a few very specific to your niche.

  • Broad hashtags: lots of traffic, but competitive

  • Medium hashtags: more targeted, easier to stay visible

  • Niche hashtags: smaller, but full of your ideal audience

It takes a little experimenting, but once you find the right combo, you will start to notice steady growth instead of random spikes.

You can also study what other creators in your niche are doing. Look at their top posts and see which hashtags appear over and over. You can test different sets each week and track what happens.

Every platform treats hashtags a little differently. On TikTok, hashtags help your video land on the For You Page, but your hook and watch time matter just as much. On Instagram, hashtags help you show up on Explore and in search. On LinkedIn, fewer hashtags look more professional.

Once you have a few sets you like, create a simple “hashtag bank” in your notes app. Make sections like: education, lifestyle, behind the scenes, etc. That way, you can copy and paste instead of starting from zero every time.

At the end of the day, hashtags are not about gaming the system. They are about connection. The right tags help the right people find you, and that is where real growth happens.
